current events assignments
Explanations of underdevelopment and economic weakness often adopt Eurocentric and environmentally deterministic explanations. Twice during the term, you will prepare a 500-600 word reflection on a pair of readings, explicitly integrating the themes discussed in these readings with the broader themes of the class. You should summarize the two readings (2 points), and then relate these readings to the topics we have discussed in class (3 points). The purpose of these assignments is to improve your ability to critique popular arguments using the methods and theories we will discuss in class. We will also have a discussion of the assignments when they are due. The assignments will be posted here and on CULearn, and you can find further information about these events in the “web resources” section of the course homepage. Please note that current event assignments should be submitted via email before class on the day they are due. Hard copies will also be accepted on those days. No late submissions will be accepted.
