What’s New?
GEOG 3402: Natural Hazards
Spr., 2009
Apr. 28:
FINAL EXAM is 7:30 or 8:00 Thurs,
May 7, normal classroom. Since the final
is not cumulative you can finish it in the equivalent of a class period (1 hr
15 min), So, if you wish to start the final at 0800 instead of 0730, you are
welcome, BUT DO NOT SHOW UP LATER THAN THAT!
Review material is posted on
the main webpage. We will review in class Thursday, and I will hold office hours
during 0800-1000 at Guggenheim on Tuesday, May 5 during finals week. If you have
questions feel free to e-mail me or make an appointment.
April 21; I posted answers
for the short answer questions of Exam 2, and for Exercise 3 on the main web
page, so that you can check our grading. Both have been handed back in class.
Study guide and
sample questions for exam 3, the final, will appear in time for a review next
week. I’ll also hold extra office hours on Tuesday morning of finals week.
April 2: Sample exam
questions for Exam 2 are now posted on the main web page. The exam is next Tue, 7th, and
will be similar to the first exam, covering lectures from Feb. 26 thru Apr. 2,
plus Exercises 2 and 3. Exercise 3 is due on the exam day.
Mar. 19 and Spring Break:
(have a safe and fun spring break!)
We got into the
hurricane material on Thur., Mar. 19 (notes now
posted), but did not get to introduce Exercise 3. You can give it try over
spring break if you’d like, you’ll be familiar with the analytical approach to
calculating risk, and we’ll discuss it in class Tue, Mar. 31 just after break.
Its due date will be put off until Apr. 7, which is also exam 2.
For EXAM 1: I’ll be
available for review questions in Guggenheim 102C office Monday, Feb. 23, 3-4
pm. The exam is during the normal class period Tuesday.
ALSO: The answer
blanks on exercise two incorrectly listed a return period of 250 instead of
200. This should have made no difference to your work base don the data table
(which was correct), but the corrected exercise sheet is on the web now.
Tue., Feb. 17:
Exercise Two is now on the web, a word.doc and a spreadsheet if you want to do the calculations in excel. THIS EXERCISE IS DUE NEXT TUESDAY, FEB. 24, BUT SINCE THAT IS ALSO OUR FIRST EXAM, TO TAKE PRESSURE OFF, YOU CAN TURN IT IN BY 5 PM THAT DAY IN PROF’S OR TA’S MAILBOX IN GEOGRAPHY/GUGGGEHEIM.
SAMPLE EXAM QUESTIONS WILL BE POSTED LATER TODAY (TUE) AND REVIEWED IN CLASS THUR.
Feb. 6, Friday:
I have posted notes for this week, but I notice now that some of the figures and tables are not reproducing in the conversion from PPT to PDF. I’ll work on this. The tables that did not translate into the PDF are in your text, tables 3.2 and 3.3.
Be sure to do Exercise one and be ready to turn it in at class on Tue, Feb. 10. The instructions and data spreadsheet are on this website under “Exercises.”
Week of Jan. 20
and 22:
A PPT for the first two classes lecture material (“Introduction”) is posted on the “Class Notes” page of this website.
I have added a couple of pieces of info to the syllabus on this site, giving a more detailed breakdown of when we will discuss certain pages in the Burton, Kates and White reading, and marked in yellow on the on-line syllabus to note the addition.
Pre-Class:
Class begins 0800 on Tue, Jan. 13.
Look over the syllabus, a tentative version of which is on on this website. We’ll briefly review it during the first class and then quickly move on to foundational concepts for the course.
We will use the textbook extensively, so you’d be well served to have one at your full disposal. A few outside readings will be posted on the class website and easily downloaded as PDFs. If you have any trouble accessing the readings, contact the instructor or TA.
