Fri., Apr. 25: Note: At the request of your fellow students, Exercise 4,
due the last class, has been made optional: you can skip it and have 40% of the
grade calculated by the first three exercises or complete this one and be
graded on four exercises.
Tue., Apr. 10: Exercise three, introduced in class
today (with another short discussion next Tuesday) is now posted.
EXERCISE THREE DUE DATE WILL
BE PUT BACK ONE CLASS, TO APR. 22 (see the syllabus on this website, and note
new dates for Exercise 4).
Thur, Apr. 3: I slightly modified sample
questions no. 2 and 5 after today’s class discussion—note that Great and Major EQ’s in the text Table 5.3 do add up to more than a dozen a
year. I also up-dated the class notes for Apr. 3(today) to include just the
slides we actually discussed, which will be covered on the second exam.
The Second Exam is on Tuesday.
Tue., Apr. 1: Sample exam two questions with answers are
now posted on the main page. The Exam is next Tuesday.
Exercise Two is now posted on the Exercises page,
also:
Tue., March 18: PLEASE NOTE A CHANGE IN THE
SYLLABUS!!!!!!!!
Both the due date for Exercise Two,
and the date for Exam Two have been delayed one class period.
SEE THE REVISED SYLLABUS ON THIS WEBSITE.
Exercise two will be introduced Thur.,
Mar. 20 (just before spring break) and will be due Thur.
Apr. 3 (you’ll have two weeks)
The second exam will then be on Thur.,
Apr. 8. This change means that the Introduction to Flood Hazards material, to
be offered in lecture on Apr. 3, will be included in the second exam. The pdf of that lecture has also been posted.
Tue., Mar. 4: Notes
for Feb. 28, Mar. 4, Mar. 6 and Mar 11 are now posted. Other notes leading up
to the second exam will be up by tomorrow.
Please note: The Mar.
6 material on “Measuring Earthquakes” includes some of what was incoherently
presented today! I plead illness---and I got the material out of sequence---so the
Mar. 6 notes cover it all and in a more logical fashion. Sorry.
Tue, Feb. 26; I have
posted answers for Exercise One on the Exercise page
of our website.
Special office hours
for first exam: Friday 11-12, 2-3; and Monday 11-12, 2-3.
Tue., Feb. 19:
I have added PowerPoint files to the class notes where the pdf’s included bad figures.
I have posted Thursday’s (Feb. 21) planned lecture----we’ll see how far we get before stopping to review for the exam, which is next Tuesday, Feb. 26.
I have posted an extended version of the SAMPLE QUESTIONS, with study guides and answers.
Wed. Feb 13;
SAMPLE EXAM QUESTIONS for the first exam have been posted on this web site, see main page.
UI also slightly modified the syllabus on the website to reflect the switch of the Feb. 7 and Feb. 12 lectures, just so you have an accurate record of how the class proceeded.
Monday, 2/4/08:
As of Monday, Feb 4, at noon, a slightly revised version of EXERCISE One (doc and html files) have been posted. We’ll discuss the exercise in class Tuesday, Feb. 5, and it is due Tues., Feb 12.
Preliminary pdf’s of lecture slides have been posted thru Feb. 14th. After each class the final version will be posted with FINAL noted on the index page.
1/15/08:
PDF’s of the lecture slides for classes thru the end of January have been posted on this site. Note that these are DRAFTS, and after each class I will post a FINAL version (so noted on the list of lecture notes) of the pdf.
Pre-Class:
Class begins 0800 on Tue, Jan. 15.
Look over the syllabus, we’ll briefly review it during the first class and then quickly move on to foundational concepts for the course.
We will use the textbook extensively, so you’d be well served to have one at your full disposal. A few outside readings will be posted on the class website and easily downloaded as PDFs. If you have any trouble accessing the readings, contact the instructor or TA.
