Map Project #7

EAST ASIA

due week of Apr 10th

 I. CULTURAL FEATURES

Use the map in your Mapping Workbook on page 64.

1. Identify the following countries:

China
Japan
North Korea
South Korea
Mongolia
Taiwan

2. Identify the following cities:
(Must be accurate to within 100 miles and, if applicable, on the coast or river)

Beijing
Guangzhou
Hong Kong
Kyoto
Nagasaki
Pyongyang
Seoul
Shanghai
Taipei
Tokyo
Ulan Bator
Xi'an

3. Use graduated symbols to express the population density of the above east Asian countries. An example of a map from your text that uses this cartographic convention is figure 3.18.  I have created a template for you of the circles you will need to express the following population densities:

country 1999 pop. density
persons per sq km
Mongolia 1.6
China 132.8
N Korea 192.4
Japan 335.7
S Korea 470.3
Taiwan 616.7
data from Mapping Workbook

Cut out the circles and trace them over the approximate middle of each country (some overlap is fine), then lightly shade in the circles. You may write in the actual population density number within the circle (or next to it in the case of Mongolia). Include a legend indicating what the circles represent.

Circle sizes were derived by creating circles with a diameter of 1/100th the value of the individual data.

II. PHYSICAL FEATURES

Instructions:
For this project you will use two maps. Complete the instructions under "cultural features" on one and those under "physical features" on the other. Do this as neatly as possible. Use a pen or pencil that enables you to write clearly. Staple the maps together and turn in to your TA.

These projects will be graded pass/fail on completeness, neatness and punctuality. It is worth 1% of your final grade. See the syllabus for information on do-overs and late projects.
