Map Project #8

SOUTH ASIA

due week of Apr 17th

 I. CULTURAL FEATURES

Use the map in your Mapping Workbook on page 82, 87, or 90.

1. Identify the following countries:

Afghanistan
Bangladesh
Bhutan
India
Maldives
Nepal
Pakistan
Sri Lanka

2. Identify the following cities or states:
(Must be accurate to within 100 miles and, if applicable, on the coast or river)

Bangalore
Bhopal
Chennai
Colombo
Delhi
Dhaka
Goa
Hyderabad (both of them)
Islamabad
Kabul
Karachi
Kathmandu
Lahore
Mumbai
Thimphu

3.For this theme you will need to do a little math. A spreadsheet program like Excel may help but is not necessary. You will be calculating the number of agricultural workers per square kilometer of arable land in each country.

First, go to the Central Intelligence Agency's World Factbook online. Access each country's profile and gather the following information: total area, arable land %, population, and % of labor force in agriculture. Use the following formula:

PF/AL

where
P=population
F=% labor in ag
A=area
L=% arable land

remember to use the decimal form of percentages.

The resulting number is the number of agricultural workers per square kilometer of arable land. Divide these data into quartiles (four categories) by the natural break method (where the data seem to naturally clump together). Or, "[b]reaks in the data sometimes offer sensible division points for classes. In the natural breaks method, the map maker visually determines these class boundary levels, attempting to maximize differences between classes and minimize differences within classes."*

Using a color ramp like in the examples below and with colored pencils or crayons, color in the countries by category.  Use the lightest color for areas with the lowest numbers and the darkest color for those the highest  numbers.

Create a legend to explain the colors.

II. PHYSICAL FEATURES

Use the map in your Mapping workbook on page 83.

1. Identify the following landforms. Feel free to use colors to identify larger areas like mountain ranges:

Aravalli Hills
Assam Valley
Himalaya Mountains
Hindu Kush Mountains
Sulaiman Range
Deccan Plateau
Thar Desert
Eastern Ghats
Western Ghats
Andaman Islands
Nicobar Islands

2. Identify the following waterways:

Brahmaputra River
Ganga River
Gadavari River
Indus River
Krishna River
Meghna River
Narmada River
Yamuna River
Arabian Sea
Indian Ocean
Bay of Bengal

Instructions:
For this project you will use two maps. Complete the instructions under "cultural features" on one and those under "physical features" on the other. Do this as neatly as possible. Use a pen or pencil that enables you to write clearly. Staple the maps together and turn in to your TA.

These projects will be graded pass/fail on completeness, neatness and punctuality. It is worth 1% of your final grade. See the syllabus for information on do-overs and late projects.
