Exercise #4
Mock UN
This exercise is designed to allow you to become more familiar with both a foreign country and international geopolitical issues. We will have a mock United Nations in recitation. This is an oral exercise.
You will need to choose a country to represent in the mock UN. A list of countries with UN membership is below. Your recitation group will select 6 issues of global importance for you to focus on for two weeks of discussion. Be prepared to suggest a few. You will then need to research those issues as they affect your country so that you are able to take a position on them. There may be some information in the text but this exercise will require outside research. Your session with the reference librarians in the week of April 3rd will help with this. Keep good notes – your data may be challenged in debate.
In the following two weeks you should be prepared to give brief 2-3 minute position statements about some of the chosen issues. You should also be prepared to defend your country’s position and interests in response to other countries.
Remember to engage in respectful argument and discussion. Unlike the real UN, racist and rude comments are not allowed (even if it is in keeping with your character as a UN delegate).

This exercise could be worth 8.3% of your final grade (your lowest exercise grade will be dropped). You will be graded on your understanding of the geographic concepts, familiarity with international issues, and your ability to communicate your position.
