“La Jaula de Oro”

 By Los Tigres Del Norte

I've put down roots in the US

It's been 10 years since I swam across the border

I haven't put my papers in order yet

I'm still illegal

My wife is here and I brought my kids when they were very young

and they've forgotten about my dear Mexico

the Mexico I'll never forget but can't return to

What good is money

if I'm like a prisoner

inside this big nation

when I remember I cry

although the jail may be made of gold

it's still a prison

"Listen to me son, would you like us to go back and live in Mexico?"

"What are you talking about dad?

I don't want to go back to Mexico, no way dad"

My kids don't talk with me

they've learned another language

they think like Americans

they deny they're Mexican

although they share my skin color

From work to home

I don't know what's wrong with me

I'm a family man

I almost never go out on the streets

I'm afraid I'll get caught

and they can deport me

What good is money

if I'm like a prisoner

inside this big nation

when I remember I cry

although the jail may be made of gold

it's still a prison
