Kiyoshi Yamashita Department of Geography, Guggenheim 301B |
I am a Masters student in the Geography department at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. I have a Bachelors Degree in Geology from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. While studying there, I developed a strong interest in GIS and Cartography, and finished school with a minor in GIS. After working in the IT department for a large insurance company, I decided to go back to school in the hopes of putting some of my GIS and Cartography skills to good use.
My work at CU is still grounded in GIS and Cartography, though not in the ways that I would have expected prior to coming here. As a TA during my first year, I spent much of my time introducing basic GIS concepts to new users. Currently, as an RA, I work on a project with Babs Buttenfield and ESRI trying to develop a GIS data model for multi-scale basemaps. For my thesis, I plan to develop a statistical model that will allow me to identify areas of high fire risk in an urban environment. My work is still in the early stages, but I plan to use the spatial statistics tools available in the ESRI GIS software to help in the analysis. I'm currently enrolled in Cartography 2 which focuses on designing maps for the web.
I was born in Miami, FL but grew up in the opposite corner of the country, in Bellingham, WA. My hobbies include photography, tennis, golf, and skiing. I also enjoy volleyball and soccer, though I haven't played much recently. I spent last summer working as an intern at ESRI in Redlands, CA and plan to be there again this summer.
