About me

I finished my Ph.D. in geography at the University of Colorado in December, 2005. I am now looking forward to beginning my academic career in geography at Macalester College. I am an urban social geographer and have particular interests in race and residential segregation, the politics of immigrant incorporation, and the formation of city/suburban landscapes.

My dissertation investigates the ways in which nonprofit social service organizations affect the incorporation of immigrants and refugees into the host society in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. I combine literature on state devolution and scale with writings on citizenship and democracy to provide geographical insights into questions about social justice, cultural change, and democratic governance that are connected to immigration and political-economic change. My research has been supported by the
National Science Foundation through a doctoral dissertation improvement grant.

Please see my curriculum vitae for more information about my academic work.

My interests and activities
I currently serve as a board member for a few different organizations:
In my spare time I enjoy a variety of activities, including mountain biking and cycling, hiking, reading fiction (I am particularly fond of 19th century Russian literature) and touring the hot springs located in the American Southwest.
