Permafrost and Construction
Permafrost can have a significant impact on the
design and of pipelines and auxillary buildings in boreal environments. In
this section the fundamental steps in constructing a natural gas pipeline
will be discussed. Then the impacts of permafrost on this process will be
explored.
This section consists of two components. The first of these component, Stages of Pipeline Construction, provides a general overview of the step that must be carried out in order to construct a pipeline. This includes such tasks as choosing the Righ-of-Way and testing the pipeline for leaks.
The second component, Impacts of Permafrost, looks more closely on how permafrost may affect the pipeline and how those effects may be minimized. For example, the shifting of the pipeline due to frost heave is discussed.
