Review #3 - Geog 1001 – Fall 2005

·        Define a soil horizon, and know the characteristics of each (O, A, B, C)

·        What is soil texture? How is it measured?

·        Why is clay so important? Define CEC.

·        Soil Moisture: How do we measure and calculate soil moisture?  Know volumetric and gravimetric soil moisture. What are advantages/disadvantages of measurement techniques?

·        Soil formation: What are the 5 factors of soil formation?

·        Biomes, what are they and where, Biomes sorted in terms of area, biomass, precipitation, temperature

·        Relationships between biome biomass and precipitation, temperature. Concept of limiting factor(s)

·        Feedbacks: Positive and negative: Be able to explain, graph, and give examples for each

·        Define: ecosystem; community; habitat; niche

·        Ecology: What is it?

·        Ecosystem Cycles: Ecosystem definition and components (biotic, abiotic, feedbacks, community, habitat, niche, competitive exclusion principle, symbiotic, (non-) sustainable, mutualism parasitic).

·        Provide examples of symbiotic and parasitic species.

·        Abiotic controls of plant distributions? (Colorado elevation against precipitation/temperature)

·        Chemical equations and explanation of photosynthesis and respiration

·        Ecosystem stability (species composition remains stable), resilience (ability to recover from change), examples of each, biodiversity

·        Ecological succession; Define primary and secondary succession
