Geog 1001 Exam 1 Review – Fall 2005

Terms and Concepts - Know and understand the following:

·        appreciate the sizes and distances in our Universe

·        latitude/longitude & parallel/meridian - define

·        wavelength, frequency, amplitude - know what these are

·        Energy terms: photons, work, joule, watt, energy flux density, energy: define each and know your units

·        Stefan-Boltzmann Law, Wien's Law, Cosine law of illumination; know how to use them

·        The solar constant: What is it?

·        EM spectrum: long- vs. short-wave, visible portion

·        The reasons for seasons: Earth’s tilt #1, tilt doesn’t change = axial parallelism, revolution, rotation

·        Atmospheres: Chemical comp: homo-, heteropshere; Temperature: tropo-, strato-, meso-, thermosphere; Function: ozone-, ionosphere; know the altitudes or each

·        short- and long-wave: transmitted, reflected or absorbed

·        Rn = S↓ - S↑ + L↓ - L↑: Define and describe with the maps shown in class

·        Albedo: What is it? What does it depend on? Typical values? e.g. high a surface: fresh snow; low a surface, dry field.

·        The 3 “fates” of radiation: What are they?

·        What happens to the rate of temperature change when then the net radiation is zero? Positive? Negative?
