Robert Nauman specializes in 19th and 20th century art and architectural history, with an emphasis in modern architecture.  His contribution to the publication Modernism at Mid-Century (University of Chicago Press, 1994), received a National Endowment for the Arts Presidential Award, and his book On the Wings of Modernism: the United States Air Force Academy (University of Illinois Press, 2004) was nominated for the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award, presented by the Society of Architectural Historians for distinguished scholarship by a North American author in the history of architecture.  The later book was a study of architectural modernism during the Cold War era, a topic he has pursued in his latest publication Walter A. Netsch: Sourcebook and Bibliography (Northwestern University Press, 2008).

With advanced degrees in both music and art and architectural history, Dr. Nauman’s current research includes an investigation of the overlapping between the fields of music and architecture.  Several University of Colorado grants from the Graduate Committee for the Arts and Humanities have also enabled him to pursue research in New York, Venice, and England related to topics dealing with architectural modernism and notions of utopia.

Dr. Nauman’s activities in professional organizations have included co-chairing the Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians in Denver, and serving on the Publications Committee for the Society for Photographic Education’s Exposure magazine.  He is also a Chief Reader for the Educational Testing Service, coordinating test development and grading of all Advanced Placement Art History exams administered in the United States. He regularly contributes and edits pedagogical material for that organization.

In addition to teaching undergraduate courses and advance topics courses in architectural history and contemporary art, Dr. Nauman’s background in arts administration led to the establishment of an undergraduate internship program between the University of Colorado and the Denver Art Museum, which he continues to administer.  A committed university teacher and recipient of an Excellence in Education Teaching Award from the University of Denver, Dr. Nauman would welcome students with interests in contemporary art and architectural history.
