The following instructions will help you get a Verification of Nonfiling Letter from the IRS. Please only submit information our office asks you to complete.

A Verification of Nonfiling Letter from the IRS provides proof that the IRS has no record of a filed Form 1040 for 2021 (the tax year being considered for 2023-24 financial aid). This letter verifies that a federal tax return was not filed.

Step 1: Get your Verification of Nonfiling Letter from the IRS

You have two options:

You can get an IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter online. To use the IRS “Get Transcript Online” service, you will need to have a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan or line of credit, or a car loan that's in your name. If you do not have a credit line or loan in your name, please see the instructions for completing IRS Form 4506-T.
  1. On the IRS Tax Record webpage, choose Get Transcript Online
  2. Follow the prompts to create a profile and verify your identity. You will need:
    • your SSN, date of birth, filing status (single, married filing jointly, etc.) and mailing address from latest tax return
    • Access to your email account
    • Your personal account number from a credit card, mortgage, home equity loan, home equity line of credit or car loan
    • A mobile phone with your name on the account (for faster registration) or ability to receive an activation code by mail
  3. For Reason for Tax Transcript, select Higher Education/Student Aid
  4. Below Return Transcript, choose 2021 (for 2023-24) or 2020 (for 2022-23 aid) to download your Verification of Nonfiling Letter. The * symbol will indicate the availability of a Verification of Non-Filing letter for that year.
  5. Make sure this document contains identifying information, the income tax year, and the date of inquiry on or after October 1.

If you're unable to use the "Get Transcript Online," complete the IRS Form 4506-T available online. Form 4506-T must be submitted to IRS. Upon receiving your form, the IRS will mail you a Return Transcript which you will submit to our office.
  1. Go to the IRS website
  2. Under the 'Forms & Instructions' tab at the top, select Form 4506-T
  3. Download and complete the form. Be sure to:
    • Complete questions 1-4, but leave question 5 blank (or write NA).
    • Only check the box beside question 7 for ‘Verification of Nonfiling.’ Leave questions 6 and 8 blank.
    • On question 9, specify the ‘Year or period requested’ as 12/31/2021 (for 2023-24) or 12/31/2030 (for 2022-23).
  4. Submit the form to the IRS per the guidance provided on the back of the form. Our office cannot accept Form 4506-T.
