Withdrawal Policy

The Withdrawal Policy Regarding Tuition and Fees states that students who pay their $200 enrollment deposit and register for classes for any given semester are obligated to pay full tuition and fees for that semester. If a student officially withdraws from the university during any semester, a portion of the tuition and fees may be reduced. For more information, read the Registrar's "Withdrawal Procedures" page. If you begin classes at CU-Boulder, receive financial aid, and then withdraw, your financial aid will be adjusted according to federal regulations.

REGULATIONS
Return of Unearned Title IV Aid
(34CFR 668.22).

The federal rules state that you earn your aid based on the period of time you remained enrolled. The following formula is used by the Office of Financial Aid to determine the percentage of aid earned:

    enrolled days*
----------------------------- = % of aid earned
     days in the
  enrollment period*
*exclude scheduled breaks of 5 or more days

If your percentage of aid earned is greater than 60%, you are eligible for all of your aid for that specific semester/term. Aid earned is credited to your tuition and fee bill.

Repayment of Unearned Aid
(34 CFR 668.22 g, h, i)

The responsibility to repay unearned aid is shared by the institution and the student

The institutions share is the lesser of:

  • the total amount of unearned aid
  • the institutional charges multiplied by the percentage of aid that was unearned by the student.

The student’s share is the difference between the total unearned amount and the institution’s share. The institution’s share is allocated among the Title IV programs, in an order specified by statute. The student share is then allocated among the Title IV programs in the order specified below. The same refund and repayment policy applies to state and institutional grants. Refund and repayment of institutional scholarships, athletic scholarships, private scholarships, and third-party scholarships is determined by the donor.

Funds are returned in the following order:

Title IV
  • Federal Stafford Loan (Unsubsidized)
  • Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized)
  • Federal Perkins Loan
  • Federal PLUS (Parent or Graduate) Loan
  • Federal Pell Grant
  • Academic Competitiveness Grant
  • National Smart Grant
  • FSEOG
  • Other Federal Aid
  • Institutional and State Aid*
  • Institutional Aid
  • Colorado Student Grant (Undergraduate/Graduate)
  • Colorado Pre-Collegiate Academic Competitiveness Grant
  • Colorado Merit Aid (Centennial Scholars)
  • Other Aid
  • Institutional scholarships
  • Athletic scholarships
  • Private scholarships
  • Third party scholarships
  • Students receiving the UCB Tuition grant for 08-09 and who withdraw from the institution will continue to receive 100% of the award amount as long as their tuition remains at 100% of the published rate for their enrollment level in main campus hours. Students will retain 0% of the award amount if they do not pay the full published rate for their enrollment level in main campus hours for the term. Students who withdraw from the institution during the drop-add period or who successfully petition for a reduction in the amount of their tuition and fees will retain 0% of their UCB Tuition Grant for the term.

This policy applies to students with financial aid who officially withdraw. It may also apply to those who stop attending classes without formally withdrawing.

Examples of refund calculations are available upon request. Visit with a financial aid counselor for more information regarding your specific situation.

    APPEALS

In the case of a prolonged illness, accident, death in the family, or other circumstances that make it impractical to complete the semester, you may submit an appeal through the Bursar’s Office. The Bursar’s Office reviews the information provided and determines a settlement that is reasonable and fair to both you and the university.

    BALANCES DUE

If unearned aid results in a balance due, a revised tuition and fee bill will be mailed to you by the Bursar’s Office. It is your responsibility to repay those funds. To ensure that you receive information in a timely manner, make sure your address and phone information is up to date with the university.
