Nondegree Students

If you are enrolled in courses at CU-Boulder, but not admitted into a degree program, then you are considered to be a non degree student. Under certain circumstances student enrolling as non degree students may be eligible for federal loan funding. Paperwork must be completed by University Departments verifying the student’s status along with the completion of the appropriate years FAFSA. Students interested in receiving aid as a non degree student must contact the financial aid advisor at Continuing Education by calling 303-492-8252. Regulations governing eligibility for financial aid for nondegree students include:

  1. You must have a high school diploma or GED. High school students taking a college course are not eligible.
  2. You must be certified by an academic official as taking courses that are necessary for enrollment into a degree program (course work simply to raise GPA for admission does not apply).
  3. You are limited to participation in the federal loan programs (Federal Direct Stafford Loan and Federal Direct PLUS Loan) and, if a Colorado resident, the Outreach Grant.
  4. You must enroll in a minimum of 6 hours.
  5. Eligibility is limited to a maximum of 12 consecutive months. To qualify, you must be considered an eligible candidate, and apply for admission into a degree program within this time frame.

Institutional Requirements to Be Considered for Nondegree Financial Aid

As a nondegree student, you must maintain certain satisfactory academic progress requirements. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the loss of financial aid funding. An appeal process is available. See our sap page for more information.

  1. Your cumulative and semester GPA must be a minimum of 2.00. This includes the GPA from any of the other CU campuses (Denver, Colorado Springs, or Health Sciences Center) you have attended.
  2. You must complete all courses you attempt (you cannot withdraw after the drop/add deadline or census date). If you receive an IW, IF or W for any course work during a term in which you received nondegree funding, you will no longer be eligible for financial aid as a nondegree student.

You must speak with a financial aid counselor regarding your unique nondegree funding limitations and required nondegree documentation.

Graduate students should consult with a graduate department advisor before enrolling for more than 9 nondegree credit hours, since many graduate departments limit the number of nondegree credits that will apply toward a CU-Boulder graduate degree.
