Law Students and Financial Aid

Q: How do I apply for financial aid?

A: In most instances a law student will be eligible for aid to cover his or her total cost of attendance. The cost of attendance “budget” includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, rent and utilities, food, medical, transportation, and personal expenses. Please note that car expenses (payments, insurance, repairs) credit card payments, and rent/utilities over the budgeted amount are not included. It is very important to keep your expenses within the budget. For the 2008-09 academic year, the CU Law budget was $34,443 for Colorado residents and $47,421 for non-residents. Financial aid for which FAFSA applicants are automatically considered include grants, Federal Direct Stafford Loans up to $20,500 per year, and/or Federal Graduate PLUS loans, which are limited only by the cost of attendance. Students who are eligible may also be considered for work-study funding in their second and third years. No credit check is required in order to receive Stafford loans, but students must be “credit-worthy” to receive PLUS loans. Further information regarding financial aid is found on the law school's web site at http://www.colorado.edu/law/admissions/financialaid/

Q: What are the tuition and fees for the 2008-2009 academic year?

A: Tuition and fees for the 2008-09 academic year are $22,045 for Colorado residents and $32,621 for non-residents. The Board of Regents will determine the tuition and mandatory fees for 2009-10 in June of 2009. It is difficult to predict what tuition will be set at for an upcoming year, but generally it is a slight increase from one year to the next.

Q: How do I apply for scholarships?

A: The admissions committee automatically considers admitted entering students for scholarships; there is no separate scholarship application for first-year applicants. Selection of scholarship recipients begins in March, and in most circumstances, recipients will be notified before their enrollment deposit is due. Although most scholarship offers come at the time of admission, It is possible for scholarships to be awarded through the end of August. If you wish to be considered for need-based scholarship funds, you must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Information regarding the FAFSA can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

In addition to institutional scholarships and grants, you may wish to participate in a self-directed scholarship search for private scholarship funds. Please refer to the Financial Aid and Scholarships section of the Colorado Law website for more scholarship information, and/or www.finaid.org/scholarships/ for more information on free scholarship databases.
