Eligibility

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will calculate your financial aid eligibility based on a variety of factors, such as your income, taxes paid, and number in household. In addition, to qualify to receive Federal Student Aid, you must meet all criteria on this page as well as; you must have a valid Social Security Number, a GED or high school diploma, and be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student working towards a degree or certificate program at a school that participates in the federal student aid program. When the FAFSA asks for our school code, please enter 001370.

Citizenship

You must be a citizen or an eligible non-citizen to receive financial aid. According to FAFSA, “Generally you are an eligible noncitizen if you are: (1) a U.S. permanent resident and you have an Alien Registration Receipt card (I-551); (2) a conditional permanent resident (I-551C); or (3) an other eligible noncitizen with an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from Department of Homeland Security showing any of the following designations: “Refugee”, “Asylum Granted”, “Parolee” (I-94 confirms paroled for a minimum of one year and status has not expired), or “Cuban-Haitian Entrant”. If you are in the U.S. on an F1 or F2 student visa, or a J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa, or a G series visa (pertaining to international organizations), you must answer “No, I am not a citizen or eligible noncitizen.” If you are neither a citizen nor an eligible noncitizen, you are not eligible for federal student aid. However, you may be eligible for state or college aid. If you’re not sure how to answer, FAFSA on the Web (www.fafsa.ed.gov/help.htm) provides additional information to help you answer these questions”. If your citizen or eligible non-citizen status does not match the Department of Homeland Security’s database while processing the FAFSA, you will be required to submit current/valid documentation of your status to our office. If this is the case we will notify you, either by letter or email, to request your documentation.

Defaulting

You go into default (definition) on a loan by not paying your monthly payments. If you enter into default you will have to rehabilitate that loan before you can get any further financial aid. If you default on a Stafford loan you will have to make payment arrangements with the lender/guarantee agency (Debt Collection Services in the case of a CU-Boulder administered Stafford or PLUS Loan). You can find out who your lender/guarantee agency is at nslds.ed.gov. If you default on a Perkins loan, please contact the school where you borrowed the loan. If the Perkins loan is from CU-Boulder, contact the University Student Loan Office in the Debt Management Department of the Bursar's Office. To clear up the default status, please mail or fax (303-492-0838) a letter to our office, from your lender/guarantee agency stating that you’re no longer in default with that particular loan and your specific payment arrangements.

Drug Convictions

A new law suspends federal student aid eligibility for students convicted under federal or state law for possession of or sale of illegal drugs.

If you have been convicted in the past, this does not automatically mean that you are ineligible for federal student aid. This worksheet will help you determine your eligibility.

Selective Service Registration

FAFSA requires all eligible males to register for selective service. If you have any questions about who is required to register, please visit the
Selective Service Website. If you are a female you are not required to register with Selective Service. But if on the FAFSA you didn’t reply ‘NO’ to the question, “are you a male”, you either need to correct your FAFSA to say “NO” or to provide our office with a copy of your birth certificate. If you were supposed to register but did not, we will ask you to provide us a 'Status Information Letter' from the Selective Service which can be requested on their website. To see who must register, please see www.sss.gov/MUST.HTM.
