INITIAL APPOINTMENT FOR TENURED AND TENURE-TRACK FACULTY

The initial appointment for instructor rank faculty ranges from one to four years. Initial appointments for probationary tenure-track faculty members are usually for a period of four years. The University of Colorado at Boulder normally recruits and hires candidates who already possess the terminal degree in their discipline. Occasionally, a primary unit will elect to extend a tenure-track position to a candidate of exceptional promise who has nearly, but not quite, completed his or her dissertation. In such a case, the faculty member is appointed at the Instructor rank, and moves to the rank of assistant professor the semester after the terminal degree is granted. In these cases, the initial contract will specify a date by which the University must receive formal notification that all requirements for the terminal degree have been met. The time spent as an instructor is not applicable as credit towards tenure; that is, the "tenure clock" starts only once the appointment to assistant professor has been made.

ARRIVING WITH PRIOR ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

A faculty member who is arriving with a year or more of prior experience as an assistant professor at another university or college is eligible for credit towards the time spent as a probationary assistant professor (up to 3 years). Credit is approved by the dean or Provost at the time of appointment.

ARRIVING WITH NON-ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

New faculty hired with non-university experience highly similar to the type of independently initiated and conducted research experience associated with being a faculty member at a university may apply to the dean or Provost for credit towards tenure and promotion. As per a memorandum to the deans dated 17 October 1989, this credit shall be awarded at a rate of one half the number of years working in such a setting and shall not exceed two years credit.

ARRIVING WITH POST-DOCTORAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE

Standard post-doctoral fellowships and experiences are not viewed as equivalent to the faculty experience at a university, and credit for such experiences is not given. In all cases where credit is given towards tenure and promotion, a comprehensive review, normally including the solicitation of external letters, is required prior to the mandatory tenure and promotion decision.
