2007 Buff Energy Star Winners

The winners of the 2009 Buff Energy Star Awards at CU-Boulder were honored October 15 during a private ceremony at the Office of the Chancellor. The three recipients are show holding plaques. This year's recipients of the Buff Energy Star Awards include Javier Portillo, building proctor of the Wardenburg Health Center, and Alan Nelson, building proctor of the Grounds and Service Center, along with Ed von Bleichert, the campus environmental operations manager who teamed with Nelson. Also pictured from left to right, are Energy Conservation Officer, Moe Tabrizi, Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano, Director of the Enviormental Center, Rob Hall, and Vice Chancellor for Administration, Frank Bruno. The Buff Energy Star Awards are a voluntary program to showcase, recognize and reward building proctors who reduce energy waste and improve efficiency. The winners helped reduce their building's energy consumption by at least 5 percent over the previous fiscal year and each received a one-time $1,000 cash bonus.

During the 2008-09 fiscal year, Wardenburg Health Center and the Grounds and Service Center combined conserved nearly 60,240 kilowatt hours of energy, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 120,480 pounds, and saved the university $6,330.

What is Buff Energy Star?

The Buff Energy Star Award Program is a voluntary program to showcase, recognize and reward building proctors that reduce energy waste and improve efficiency with the assistance of the Resource Conservation Office & Facilities staff. The campus annual energy bill currently exceeds $25 million dollars. The goal of the Buff Energy Star program is to reduce energy consumption, reduce campus CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts of energy usage, and provide energy conservation learning opportunities. Building proctors in buildings granted the Buff Energy Star Award will receive a $1000 bonus.

The Buff Energy Star Award is granted to buildings that fulfill all of the following 4 program criteria:

  • The building must reduce its electricity use by at least 5% from the prior fiscal year.
  • The building proctor must take an active role in communicating and encouraging building occupants to conserve resources. This can be achieved by displaying energy and water conservation posters and educational materials (provided by Environmental Center and Resource Conservation Office).
  • The building proctor must complete the Energy Audit Checklist with Moe Tabrizi, the Campus Energy Conservation Officer (ECO).
  • The building proctor must work with the ECO to take action on the findings of the audit and submit the Energy Audit Follow-Up.
