As we read a selection of writings by Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, and China Miéville, we will consider the textual innovations and cultural issues at stake in modern British and Irish fiction.  Course readings will be arranged under three headings representing notable phases in the evolution of this literary tradition: High Modernism, the Absurd, and Postmodernism.  Written work will include three 7-8 page essays and a final examination.
