Pre-Engineering Program Requirements

Interested in completing the Pre-Engineering Program at the College of Engineering and Applied Science? Please read the following program requirements carefully in order to plan your coursework and ensure you meet all admission requirements. For more information, please contact James H. Coursework

The following courses must be completed on the CU-Boulder campus. If you have AP, IB, or other college credit for any of these courses, consult with the Pre-Engineering Program Manager regarding transfer credit. Courses are offered fall and spring semesters unless otherwise indicated.

  1. Complete two mathematics courses:
    • Calculus 1 (APPM 1350 or MATH 1300)
    • Calculus 2 (APPM 1360 or MATH 2300)
  2. Complete two lab science courses:
    • General Chemistry 1 and 2 with relevant lab courses
    1. CHEM 1113 & CHEM 1114 (lab)
    2. CHEM 1133 & CHEM 1134 (lab)
    • OR calculus-based physics
      1. PHYS 1110
      2. PHYS 1120
    • OR one semester of General Chemistry w/lab and one semester of calculus-based physics
  3. Complete one engineering course:
    • COEN 1500: Intro to Engineering¬† (offered fall semester only)
    • OR appropriate course approved by Pre-Engineering Program Manager

Pre-Engineering students not making satisfactory progress towards admission in the College will be discontinued in the Pre-Engineering Program and will work with their Arts & Sciences advisor toward completion of the Arts & Sciences degree they have chosen.

Admission Requirements

Students completing the required CU-Boulder coursework and meeting the criteria below will be guaranteed admission to the major of choice in the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

  1. The CU-Boulder Cumulative GPA must be 2.700 or above. The CU-Boulder Cumulative GPA includes grades for all courses taken on the CU-Boulder campus.
  2. The CU-Boulder Technical GPA must be 2.700 or above. The CU-Boulder Technical GPA includes the specific math/science/engineering course work outlined above, as well as additional selected technical courses a student elects to take at CU-Boulder.
  3. Grades earned for courses included in CU-Boulder Technical GPA must be C or higher.
  4. The term GPA at the time of review must be 2.250 or higher.
  5. Enrollment and completion of a minimum of 12 credit hours during semester of review (fall or spring only).

Once a Pre-Engineering student completes the required courses, he or she will automatically be evaluated for admission to the major of choice within the College of Engineering and Applied Science. If eligible, the student will be admitted for the following semester (fall or spring only). Students matriculating at CU-Boulder prior to fall 2014 should consult with the Pre-Engineering Program Manager for alternative admission requirements.
