A 21st century grand challenge in science and engineering is the development of a framework for understanding and predicting the whole Earth as a single complex system.  To meet this challenge, we must develop new ways of conducting research and offering graduate programs that cross the traditional boundaries between science and engineering.

The CU-Boulder AeroSpace Ventures initiative creates a collaborative environment in which CU’s aerospace engineering and earth and space science faculty, students, and industrial researchers work together to solve complex problems that lead to new discoveries and innovations.  Through this initiative, CU-Boulder combines aerospace vehicle innovations and science discoveries for local and global measurements to advance solutions in climate, weather, and space environment.

CU-Boulder AeroSpace Ventures Academic Partners

Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences
Ranked among the top four schools in the country by the National Research Council, CU-Boulder’s Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) is recognized for its research and education leadership in aerospace engineering, Earth, and space sciences. Its world-renowned engineers and scientists tackle challenges in aerospace technology and science, focusing on astrodynamics and satellite navigation, remote sensing, Earth and space sciences vehicle systems, structural and material systems, and bioastronautics.

Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences
Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences (APS) is ranked among the top ten astronomy and planetary science departments in the country, and its faculty’s research interests cover theoretical, observational, and experimental space science.  APS has a long history of hands-on training for students in the techniques of space science.

Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
Diverse and interdisciplinary, the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (ATOC) at CU Boulder is a world leader in investigations of weather phenomena and climate science, from the depths of the ocean to the outer reaches of the atmosphere. Our highly recognized research and education programs, which include theory, modeling, and measurements from the ground, balloons, aircraft, and satellites, place us in the top ten graduate departments in the nation. ATOC faculty and students address fundamental questions of societal relevance in the areas of aerosol and cloud physics, atmospheric chemistry, radiative transfer, renewable energy, fluid dynamics, and ocean biogeochemistry.

Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences
At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research In Environmental Sciences, hundreds of environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth System and the human relationship with the planet. Satellite and airborne remote sensing and airborne in situ observations are fundamental to our success, as are ground-based measurements, modeling and data analysis. As a joint institute of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Colorado at Boulder, CIRES’ expertise is broad and deep, and our focus on innovation and collaboration has made us a world leader in interdisciplinary environmental research and teaching.

Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics
As an Institute of CU-Boulder, the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is at the international forefront of space science research in solar, planetary, atmospheric and space plasma physics. LASP’s record of excellence in space instrument and spacecraft construction, mission operations, and science data analysis for Earth, planetary, and deep space missions is supported by organizational expertise in space-flight electronics, mechanisms, detectors and optics across a wide spectral range -- including sensors for energetic particle, dust, electric field, and magnetic field measurements. LASP’s culture values student participation in space science, engineering, and mission operations, providing workforce development training complimentary to the student’s educational pursuits.
