Anna Lieb, a senior double-majoring in applied mathematics and engineering physics, has won the prestigious Churchill Scholarship, which will pay for a year’s study at Cambridge University.
The scholarship, which comes on the tails of the Goldwater Scholarship that is helping to fund her education this year, is worth approximately $50,000.
Lieb, who also participates in the Engineering Honors Program, will take her place at Cambridge next October as CU-Boulder’s third Churchill Scholar, and the second since 2007 when engineering physics and applied mathematics major Ben Safdi won the award.
“It’s exciting to see our students doing so well in these very competitive situations. Winning two prestigious awards is quite an accomplishment,” says Deborah Viles, CU-Boulder’s top scholarships director.
Originally from Golden, Colorado, Lieb says she plans to work toward a doctorate in applied mathematics with the goal of conducting research in modeling problems in ecology and systems biology. Her interests are both broad and deep, and connected by her deep love of the “elegance of mathematics” and her determination to use her skills to help solve problems in the world.
Lieb’s mentors say they believe she is one of the finest students to come through the math and science programs at the university. “She has a deep sense of purpose about fulfilling her potential,” says Scot Douglass, director of the Engineering Honors Program.
“I have no doubt that she will be a prominent national and international leader in the future,” agrees Anne Dougherty, associate chair of applied mathematics.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Lieb has a full extracurricular life. She’s an avid outdoorswoman, as well as a marathon runner, and a two-time national women’s snowshoeing champion.
She also directs the CU Wilderness Study Group, a student environmental organization, and shares her interest in ecology and biology with Girl Scout troops by volunteering to lead badge activities through the BOLD Center.
