Chinese Certificate

The following are guidelines for students and advisors as approved by the Center of Asian Studies.

To enter the certificate the student:

• must be an undergraduate degree student enrolled in the College of Engineering & Applied Science
• be in good standing with a 2.75 GPA or higher
• submit an “addition of certificate program” adding the certificate
  (forms may be obtained from the director of international programs in the Engineering Dean’s Office)

Chinese Requirements (5 courses/16-23 hours)

     Language Courses (3 courses/9-15 hours)

• Three college level ( 9-15 hours) of Chinese language courses take at a level commensurate with the student’s ability
• Placement in language courses will be determined by the undergraduate advisor for Chinese based on placement testing, personal interview and/or examination of transcripts. For example, a beginning student with no Chinese language instruction might take CHIN 1010, 1020.2110 ( 15 hours) but a student with several years of high school Chinese might take CHIN 2120, CHIN 3110, CHIN 3120 ( 15 hours).
• Courses that repeat a student’s prior knowledge of Chinese will not apply to this certificate.

     Chinese Literature/Culture (2 courses/7-8 hours)

• Students should take CHIN 1012 Intro to Chinese Civilization, plus one additional course in Chinese literature or culture. The latter may include courses taught in English.
  Note: The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations is undergoing a curriculum revision process, which means students may need to substitute courses. Contact the department for more information.
• Study Abroad: Chinese credits earned at a CU-approved program in a Chinese speaking country can be accepted as Chinese courses for language or culture credit with approval from the Chinese advisor.
• Transfer Credit: No more than 9 hours of transfer credit or 6 credits of AP credit may be applied towards certificate requirements. GEEN 3930 Internship: is open to students of the certificate program who have junior or senior standing and completed CHIN 2120 with a B- or better.  This may be applied toward 3 hours of either language or culture credit.  See Asian Languages and Civilizations department for advising.

Engineering Requirements

• Students must complete all requirements for their respective majors
• Students should make sure that all Chinese courses they take fulfill the requirements for humanities and social sciences in their major degree programs.
• Students will take WRTG 3030, HUEN 3100, GEEN 3000 or an approved alternate course to fulfill their upper division writing requirement.
• Certificate students will complete GEEN 1400 or an alternate course approved by their major department.
