German Certificate

The following information is a guideline for students seeking to earn an International Engineering Certificate in German.

German Requirements (5 courses/15-18 hours)

     Language Courses (3 courses/9-12 hours)

• Three college-level (9-12 credits) German language courses taken at a level commensurate with the student's ability.
• Placement in language courses will be determined by the undergraduate advisor for German based on placement testing, personal interview and/or examination of transcripts.  For example: a beginner with no German background would take German 1010, 1020, 2010 (12 credits), but a student with several years of high school German might take 2020, 3010, 3020 (10 credits).
• Students who meet prerequisites must take at least one of the following: GRMN 3020 Professional German or GRMN 4030 Business German.
• Courses that repeat a student's prior knowledge of German will not apply toward this certificate.
• Students who start language courses at the level 3020 or above may substitute German literature/culture courses taught in German for some language courses.

     German Literature/Culture (2 courses/6 hours)

• Two college courses (6 credits) in German culture and/or literature.  These may include courses taught by GSLL in German or English.
• Study Abroad:  German credits earned at CU-approved program in a German-speaking country can be accepted as German courses for language or culture credit with approval of the German advisor. For more information please visit the CU Study Abroad Programs Office
• Transfer Credit: No more than 9 credits of transfer credit or 6 credits of AP credit may be applied toward certificate requirements.
• Students who complete GRMN 3020 and with at least a B- may take the GEEN 3930 Internship course.

Engineering Requirements

• Certificate students must complete all requirements for their respective engineering majors.
• Students should make sure that the German courses they take fulfill the requirements for humanities and social sciences in their respective major degree programs.
• Students will take WRTG 3030, or HUEN 3100 and 3200.
• Certificate students will complete GEEN 1400 or GEEN 3400:  Engineering Projects courses, or an alternate course approved by the major department.
• If offered, complete 1-credit seminar in International Engineering.

Upon completion of requirements:

• A certificate advising form should be completed and signed by student, German advisor, and Engineering advisor and turned in to the director of international programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at least one month prior to graduation.
• Copies will be sent to the advisor for the Engineering major, the German advisor and records office (Registrar) so that the certificate will appear on the official transcript.
