The College of Engineering and Applied Science helps K-12 teachers bring STEM concepts, particularly engineering, into their classrooms. We bring expertise that makes math and science fun and relevant to young learners, so they are academically prepared for college admission. Our resources advance children and high school students' interest in science and technology by making these topics fun and relateable to their world.

Resources

Established by NASA in 1989, Colorado Space Grant Consortium is part of a national effort to maintain America's preeminence in aerospace science and technology, the Colorado Space Grant Consortium extends space education to K-12 schools through its 13 member colleges, universities, and other organizations throughout Colorado. Headquartered at CU Boulder, the consortium works with teachers and, provides classroom speakers, and offers group tours and hands-on activies to extend space education throughout Colorado.

CU Boulder leads a team of universities in the development of an online library that is populated with more than 1,500 standards-based, NGSS-aligned engineering lessons, activities and maker challenges for use by K-12 educators. TeachEngineering provides free access to K-12 STEM resources and is searchable by subject area, grade level, keywords, academic standards, and other filters.

Designated as a Program of Excellence by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, the Integrated Teaching & Learning Laboratory offers hands-on engineering education opportunities for K-12 teachers and students and the general public. The facility is open to the general public for visiting and school group tours (scheduled in advance). Kids will love the interactive exhibits, which teach engineering concepts in fun and unusual ways. Visit K-12 School Tour to learn more. K-12 Initiatives include the development of the TeachEngineering.com digital library, NSF teaching Fellows in K-12 local public schools, and afterschool engineering clubs, among other programs.

CU Engineering's Broadening Opportunity through Leadership and Diversity (BOLD) Center creates an inclusive environment where diverse students achieve their dreams. The center provides academic resources, student leadership opportunities, and a supportive community to break down the barriers that keep too many talented young students from reaching their aspirations. We host and collaborate on many K-12 engineering education initiatives. These include the Colorado MESA Fall Fling, Explore Engineering Day, Girl Scout Badge Program, and partnerships with local schools.

Engineering integrates math and science concepts in a real-world context, and we've developed curriculum plans that excite students and meet state standards in math, science and technology. As part of an NSF GK-12 Program, TEAM Fellows partner with teachers to introduce engineering as a career path. CU Engineering students have served as engineering experts in K-12 schools since 1999, reaching thousands of Colorado students in third through twelfth grade.
