Planning is underway for a new Aerospace and Energy Systems Building, which will be a significant addition to the Engineering Center at Colorado Avenue and Regent Drive.
The building will provide critically needed space to grow and support programs that are hallmarks of the Boulder campus and vital to the future of Colorado and the nation.
The new facility will expand space for hands-on learning and will support collaboration among engineers and scientists, who together can build even more advanced and integrated systems.
The Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences, which currently suffers from a shortage of teaching space and is scattered in offices and labs throughout the Engineering Center, will move into the bottom three floors of the new four-story building. More space will be available for undergraduate and graduate students to complete hands-on projects using specialized facilities such as clean rooms for the development and assembly of space hardware, working team rooms, and a design-review theater.
An energy systems cluster comprising electrical, civil, and architectural engineers will be created on the top floor. This group will also make use of the roof, where a solar array and wind generator will be a hands-on classroom and laboratory providing power to a section of the building.
The energy systems cluster will house the newly established Center for Research and Education in Wind, while allowing us to hire additional energy faculty. This growth will support a new degree program in electrical and energy engineering and—by bringing faculty and students from varied disciplines together—will provide fertile ground for innovations in sustainable engineering.
We invite you to join us as a partner in supporting this important expansion of our facilities. Your support is needed to help us educate the increasing number of students needed to fill critical roles in our nation's workforce, while creating new applied technologies, startup companies, and economic benefits for the state of Colorado and the nation.
