EVEN 1000 Introduction to Environmental Engineering

"Outcomes"


Our undergraduate engineering degree programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), a professional organization that provides guidelines for engineering education in the United States.  ABET is supported by the major professional engineering organizations (e.g., the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers).  Every six years, ABET evaluates the engineering degree programs the College of Engineering and Applied Science.  Part of the evaluation is an assessment of "outcomes," a set of general criteria for student achievement.  This course attempts to fulfill these student achievement outcomes in the following ways for EVEN:

Environmental Engineering (EVEN) Outcomes Role of EVEN 1000 in Achieving Outcome
  • EVEN graduates have sufficient knowledge of engineering, mathematics, and science fundamentals to succeed in environmental engineering practice or advanced degrees
Not applicable.  EVEN 1000 is not considered an engineering fundamental.
  • EVEN graduates have sufficient knowledge of advanced environmental engineering applications and complementary natural sciences to succeed in environmental engineering practice or advanced degrees
Not applicable.  EVEN 1000 is not considered an advanced engineering application.
  • EVEN graduates have sufficient knowledge of engineering approaches to problem solving (hypothesis, design, testing; team work) to succeed in environmental engineering practice or advanced degrees
Minor goal of the course.  Some EVEN 1000 assignments, readings, and discussions will include elements of engineering approaches to problem solving.
  • EVEN graduates have sufficient knowledge of basic engineering skills and tools (computer, laboratory, and field) to succeed in environmental engineering practice or advanced degrees
Not applicable.  EVEN 1000 does not include computing, laboratory, or field elements.
  • EVEN graduates have adequate writing and oral presentation skills to succeed in environmental engineering practice or advanced degrees
Major goal of the course.  Most of the EVEN 1000 assignments will be short writing assignments.  Some oral presentations will be done by the students as well.
  • EVEN graduates will participate in faculty-guided research projects and write reports and theses to verify their ability to perform environmental engineering work independently and communicate the results of the work

  • EVEN graduates have adequate understanding of the social, economic, political, and ethical context of environmental problems and solutions
Major goal of the course.  EVEN 1000 readings and guest lectures will emphasize these aspects of environmental problems and solutions.
  • EVEN graduates will include service at the local, state, national, or global levels as an important part of their environmental engineering careers
Minor goal of the course.  EVEN 1000 will introduce students to service projects in environmental engineering.
  • EVEN graduates will recognize the importance of life-long learning by seeking advanced degrees and pursuing continuing education
