Charles M. "Chuck" Schloss
Engineering Physics
Private Practice
With interests ranging from cosmological physics to ham radio to portrait painting to city government, Chuck Schloss has been called a true renaissance man, as well as a consummate and successful engineer throughout a professional career of over 45 years.
Chuck graduated from CU in 1952 with his B.S. in engineering physics. He also received the Society of Military Engineers Gold Medal, and as a Distinguished Military Graduate he was offered and accepted a regular army commission. He served for 5 years during and after the Korean War, with 2 years in artillery and 3 years in guided missile R&D at Huntsville, Alabama, earning a Commendation Medal.
He then returned to Denver and assumed leadership of Schloss & Shubart, Inc., a national industrial products firm. Under his direction, Schloss & Shubart grew from $300,000 in annual sales to $4,000,000 in annual sales by diversifying the company's product mix and positioning it to take advantage of the opportunities offered by a growing international market.
In 1984, Chuck founded Schloss Engineered Equipment, Inc., specializing in water and wastewater treatment, bulk material handling, equipment design, manufacturing, and sales. Within 4 years, this firm was doing $2,000,000 in sales a year.
In his career, Chuck has designed and furnished water, wastewater, and bulk material handling equipment for all 50 states and for more than 15 foreign countries. He has gained an international reputation as an authority on primary treatment and conveying machinery design. He holds four patents with one pending and another ready to be filed.
He has also served his community as City Council member for 11 years, Deputy Mayor, Manager of Public Works, and Police Commissioner, and he has been a member of the Board of the Sanitation District for 25 years. His many civic contributions include development of a master road repair and repaving program and development of a total citywide sanitation system.
In addition to his degree in engineering physics, Chuck did post-graduate work in orbital mechanics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in astrophysics at CU.
Chuck is proud that his parents, his wife, and two of his children are CU graduates. He, his father, Charles, Sr., and his daughter, Kristy, comprise three generations who have graduated from the College. He and wife JoAnn have three children, Charles M. Schloss III, Sindi Jo Schloss Romanelia, and Kristy Anne Schloss. Kristy has succeeded him as President of the company, making Schloss Engineered Equipment the only manufacturer in its industry in the country with a woman as chief executive.
