Information Technology

Optoelectronic Computing Systems (OCSC), continued

Using innovative techniques for integrating information technology into engineering education, the Technology for Education Group is developing a series of multimedia educational modules, which will be distributed nationally to universities, businesses, and the NSF Digital Library. Professor Bart Van Zeghbroeck, at left, works with research assistant Roberto Gonzalez on the project.

The center participates in a diverse range of academic and research projects dealing with the application of light to the handling and processing of information. Major focus areas include telecommunications, computing/signal processing, bioengineering, organo-optics, nanotechnology, and the pursuit of terahertz speeds for photonic devices.

The center has been a driving force behind making the Rocky Mountain region an internationally known area for photonics by helping to create a unique environment for photonics businesses. Faculty members work with industrial partners on joint research and development projects, and students receive unique multidisciplinary training. OCSC also founded the Center for Advanced Photonics Technology through a $4.4 million state Legislature appropriation and helped establish the Colorado Photonics Industry Association.

The center continues to focus on the importance of education and developing a potent workforce in Colorado. The Technology for Education Group (TEG) working within the OCSC, has been awarded a $450,000, three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to create an educational resource center focused in the area of Optoelectronic Microsystems.
