Bioengineering and Materials Science

Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, continued

Formed in 1997, the center's primary objective is to facilitate and enhance educational programs which train students to work in pharmaceutical biotechnology. The center originated from a collaborative relationship between the Ph.D. programs in pharmaceutical sciences and chemical engineering.

In the first two years of its existence, the center launched several new graduate courses and initiatives, attracted over $1 million in research funding from corporate sponsors, hosted four international scientific meetings and had its new drug delivery technology licensed, leading to the founding of a new Colorado company.

The center is divided into three research cores:

  • pharmaceutics, covering drug stability and drug delivery research;
  • molecular biology, where recombinant DNA technology is employed to identify new drug targets, synthesize macromolecular therapeutics, and understand the molecular basis of disease; and
  • analytical chemistry, where new methods are developed to characterize macromolecular structure, in vivo drug concentrations, and drug purity. http://www.uchsc.edu/sp/sp/biotech/cpbmain.html
