Our Corporate Partners Agilent Technologies, continued
A new member of the Engineering Advisory Council, Gilles follows a series of Agilent employees who have served on departmental and college-wide advisory boards, either as Agilent or HP representatives. John Scruggs, senior vice president and manager of the Automated Test Group, and John Riggen, public affairs manager for Colorado, are among those who have served in this capacity. Many other staff from the company's Loveland plant also are involved in CU. Campus manager Lynn Schmidt heads up Agilent's recruiting efforts, while other engineers mentor student design projects through the Industry/University Cooperative Projects Center (see Mechanical Engineering section for a description of the project). Tom Brown, a former HP employee now part of Agilent's Communications Solutions group, has taught the capstone design course in electrical and computer engineering for many years as an adjunct professor, bringing industry experience to students in the classroom. Under its new corporate name, Agilent has continued to provide equipment grants to CU and other universities, bringing state-of-the-art equipment into undergraduate labs. The company funds hundreds of equipment grants each year in universities around the world, along with 50 to 75 cutting-edge research projects in their fields of interest, and provides matches to the philanthropic gifts made by its employees. Agilent also is establishing a new Ph.D. fellowship at CU-Boulder in the area of photonics research. As a scientist who launched the initial DNA Diagnostic research in the late Œ80s at HP, Gilles saw first-hand how hard it was to recruit advanced students. The new fellowship program establishes a long-term connection involving financial support and mentorship by an Agilent engineer. |
