Hewlett-Packard Company, continued

The lab stations on the ITLL main plaza were made possible through a grant from Hewlett-Packard.

The company has a history of giving back to the community that started with founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, and it continues that pattern under current CEO Carly Fiorina. In February, the company launched an initiative to bring $1 billion in products and services to governments, development agencies, and nonprofit groups in the developing world.

HP Procurement Manager Jon Riesberg, who also serves as campus manager to CU, works with the university on a variety of philanthropic gifts that correspond with the company's interests.

"We see a world that has a tremendous capability of impacting people's lives through the Internet," says Riesberg, an alumnus of the college who now has two daughters studying on campus.

HP philanthropy also is directed at outreach programs that help to increase interest among women and minority students in technical careers, such as the Success Institute offered by the ITL Laboratory and Multicultural Engineering Program. HP also provided an equipment grant to the Institute for Women in Technology's Virtual Development Center in the Department of Computer Science. The new program is aimed at attracting and retaining more women in the information technology field. (See Computer Science section for a description of this program).

HP's partnership with the College of Engineering involves recruitment activities as well, including presentations to student organizations and participation in career fairs; and helping to provide an industry perspective to the college through several advisory boards.

HP employees who have been involved with the college include Research Director Fred Kitson, who serves on the Engineering Advisory Council, and Colorado Public Affairs Manager Will Arduino, who is a member of the college's Resource Development Committee.
