Embedded Systems Certificate Opens Doors in Microprocessor Design, continued

Practicing engineers in local industry, along with on-campus degree students, have been enrolling in the program since 1999 to learn how to design and implement these systems. They are headed for a career that is in great demand, in a field with market sales of more than 3 billion microprocessors per year.

In the three-course program, students first learn how to develop and debug embedded systems hardware and firmware. Next, they design and build their own microprocessor-based embedded systems. Finally, they build a project, pursue it through the product life-cycle from concept to system integration, and gain design skills that will put them ahead in this burgeoning field.

StorageTek, Sun, Ball, Seagate, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Xilinx and many other local companies stand to benefit from the program through their employees' enhanced skills. Likewise, degree students are finding that the program opens many career doors.

Embedded Systems Design, taught by Linden McClure of Hewlett-Packard, is one of the department's highest-rated courses. Sam Siewert of Network Photonics and Jennifer Trelewicz of IBM currently teach the other two courses. For more information, visit http://ece-www.colorado.edu/embedded.html.
