College Awards Telecommunication Expert Dale Hatfield Named Engineer of Distinction, continued
He joined the ITP in January, after stepping down from his position as chief of the Office of Engineering and Technology at the Federal Communications Commission. He held this position for two years, working on such high-profile issues as the merger of AOL and Time-Warner, before retiring from government service. Mr. Hatfield was awarded the college's Engineer of Distinction Award at the Engineering Awards Banquet in April, recognizing his lifetime achievements in the engineering profession. His association with ITP began nearly two decades ago when he started teaching a technology and policy course, which has consistently been rated by students as one of the best in the program. He did this while establishing the consulting firm, Hatfield Associates, specializing in engineering, economic, and policy studies in the telecommunications field. The firm developed an economic model of local telephone networks, known as the "Hatfield Model," which has been used by regulatory agencies in the United States and throughout the world in the setting of prices for interconnection and other purposes. His contributions to the national arena have been recognized with a number of awards including the Department of Commerce Silver Medal, the Attorney General's Distinguished Service Award, and the FCC's Gold Medal Award for distinguished service. He holds a bachelor's degree
in electrical engineering from Case Institute of Technology and a master's
degree in industrial management from Purdue University.
