Service Statement
It is the responsibility of each one of us to give back to our profession, our university, and our extended communities something of ourselves in recognition that whatever it is we have accomplished, we have done so with the help of others.
Community:
Modeling this example, I have involved students in providing help to the community on the following projects: Longmont YMCA, United Church of Christ of Boulder, Environmental Center of the Rockies (Boulder), the Boulder Jewish Community Center, and the City of Nederland, in addition to the project-based learning experiences that are listed under “Educational Experience and Accomplishments.” On a personal basis, I volunteer regularly for Children’s Creative Response to Conflict, Holocaust Awareness Institute (Denver), and Habitat for Humanity.
Professional:
As a Senior Instructor, I see my role primarily in the area of teaching—which I have chosen as an avocation and a lifestyle. I make myself available to my students in a variety of ways. I choose to live in Boulder within two miles of campus, give all my students my home address and phone number, and encourage them to visit with me in and out of the university environment. This includes regular contact with our construction engineering graduates as well. However, I maintain membership in the following organizations: ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), ASEE (American Society of Engineering Education), AGC (Association of General Contractors), ULI (Urban Land Institute), and DBIA (Design-Build Institute of America.)
University:
I will continue to serve in any capacity that the department, college, or university requests of me. I have served on the Curriculum Committee for the past three years as well as the Dean’s committee to recruit freshmen for the university. I have lectured on a number of occasions to groups such as Women in Engineering and Minorities in Engineering. I am involved in Student Engineers’ Day and serve as the Faculty Advisor for Theta Tau fraternity and AGC. I am most proud of the AGC chapter because it represents a direct link between the students and industry. Last year, the 87 members represented the largest student chapter of any campus in the country and raised funds to send 10 students who represented CU engineering at the national conference in Las Vegas.
The Construction Engineering and Management Group has just received a grant of $1,000,000 from private industry. I was intimately involved in the process of raising these funds. It is my intention to devote the next four years to additional fund-raising efforts in an attempt to raise an additional $13 million for the Construction Engineering and Management Group.
