Currently there are no other courses in the curriculum that address non-hazardous solid waste management. This is a critical issue, as space for landfills runs out and sources of natural resources become depleted. Recycling is gaining momentum across the country. This course will closely follow the textbook and address the topics listed in the proposed schedule below. Due to the compressed nature of the course into three weeks, the quality of the selected textbook is critical so that you can readily acquire needed information. In addition, there are two related textbooks that I will consult for further information, and there is a vast quantity of material available through the Environmental Protection Agency and the world-wide web.

Tours of local recycling facilities (including recycling programs at CU-Boulder), composting facilities, and refuse-derived fuel incinerator will be included.

Grades will be determined by student performance on homework assignments, two Friday quizzes, and a final exam. Homework and quizzes will be returned the following class period.

  • Learn about the scope of solid waste generation in the U.S. - quantity, characteristics, etc.
  • Learn about the collection of solid wastes
  • Learn about potential products from recycled materials
  • Learn how to design solid waste incineration, composting facilities, and landfills

Waste Management and Resource Recovery, 1995, Rhyner, Schwartz, Wenger, Kohrell. CRC Press.

  • Attend class and participate in in-class discussions and exercises
  • Homework assignments (~10)
  • Midterm and Final Exam
