Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

TissueThe ChBE Department has active research programs in:
 •  Biotechnology and Bioengineering
 •  Catalysis
 •  Chemical Reaction Engineering
 •  Environmental Chemical Engineering
 •  Fluid Mechanics and Transport Phenomena
 •  Low-Gravity Science and Space Applications
 •  Polymers and Materials Science and Engineering
 •  Membranes and Separations
 •  Process Modeling
 •  Control and Optimization
 •  Thermodynamics
This research has traditionally been undertaken by the faculty, graduate students, and visiting researchers. More and more however, undergraduate students are making significant contributions to the research and creative work of the Department.

Our program has a strong reputation for active engagement with the students. Our students have significant contact with other ChBE students and faculty every semester of the curriculum.
More than 2/3 of our undergraduates work with faculty members on a variety of research options.
•   Independent Study for Credit
•   Independent Study for Pay
•   Senior Thesis
•   Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) summer program

Independent Study for Credit

Enroll in an independent study project under the supervision of a faculty member
Typically a 3-credit-hour independent study requires 9-hours of research work per week
Credit courts as technical elective

Independent Study for Pay

Work on an hourly basis for pay - Part time during the academic year
Work on an hourly basis for pay - Full time during the summer semester
Work along side faculty who have research grants specifically designed to support undergrad students

Senior Thesis

Only selected students are allowed to participate
Total time allotted is two semesters
Earn 2-credit hours per semester
Project  must be endorsed by a faculty research advisor
Required Components:
 •  oral presentation  •  written reports

Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) - summer program

REU Hike 2003REU is a 10-week summer research program
Interested Students Must Apply
Each Undergraduate participant pursues fundamental investigations - Examples include:
 •  Nancomposites •  Biomaterials •  Sensors •  Catalysts
 •  Polymers •  Gels •  Ceramics •  Thin Films •   Many More
