Polymer Chemistry and Engineering

Biodegradable polymers made by photopolymerization of supercritical sprays for controlled-release drug delivery. Faculty: Anseth, Bowman, Bryant, George, Gin, Jayaraman, Stansbury, Stoykovich

Polymer chemistry and engineering represents a major research thrust in the department; in the last five years, more than 150 journal articles have been published and more than 15 patent disclosures filed in the polymers area. A unique theme of the department’s research is the design of monomer synthesis and design for novel functionalities. Furthermore, research in the department emphasizes the vertical integration of investigation of monomer chemistry, polymerization mechanism, material properties, and novel applications. Specific research areas include the following:
    •Self-assembled organic monomers
    •Biomaterials
    •Photopolymerizations
    •Micro- and nanotechnology applications

Porous cell scaffolds for microdevice tissue culture.
