| ACHIEVEMENTS
The National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) conducted a study over eight years, tracking the retention rate for undergraduate minority engineering students. The University of Colorado at Boulder ranked seventh for retention out of the 117 institutions included in the study. CU's retention rate was 66.9 percent for minority freshmen, compared to a national average of 36.5 percent! MEP LEADERSHIP CLASS The MEP leadership class (GEEN 1510 and 1520) is for freshmen and new transfer students in MEP. The course is titled "Self-Management and Leadership Principles," and teaches various academic and leadership skills to help new students gain a more solid footing at CU. Visit our Freshman Leadership Course page to learn more.
The academic excellence workshops (AEWs) are conducted in such "gateway" courses as calculus, chemistry and physics. The AEWs are meant to supplement regular class work and provide students with an edge during their freshman year. Please visit our AEW page for a complete description of the workshops and how they help students. You will also find a list of the current AEWs being held this semester. TUTOR REQUESTS MEP recognizes the occasional need for assistance in courses beyond those taken during the freshman year. We organize study groups and individual tutors for some of the more difficult engineering courses in all majors. Additionally, MEP works to find tutors for any course, engineering or otherwise, in which students may be experiencing problems. MEP students may download a Tutor Request Form (in PDF format), fill it out and submit it to the MEP office. STUDY CENTER The MEP Study Center is a facility behind the MEP administrative offices. It is a home away from home for students--it has study tables, chalk and white boards, a number of computers equipped with various software used by engineering students, a small kitchenette and refrigerator, copy machine and bulletin boards displaying various resources. MEP students may gain after-hours card access, making the study center available 24 hours a day. RETREATS As part of our student development program, MEP will occasionally hold retreats for students. Some are for select groups of students only; for example, MEP has held New Student retreats and Freshman retreats. These are announced on an ongoing basis. Retreats contribute to students' academic and professional development, and help provide a sense of community. (Plus, they are fun!) ADVISING Some MEP administrators may act as academic advisors. They can help students make choices about classes, as well as assist with such procedures as dropping and adding classes and helping with graduation requirements. MEP staff can work in conjunction with a student's faculty advisor and help determine an individualized degree plan.
