SMART PROGRAM The Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) program allows undergraduate students to conduct summer research in science and engineering. Students participate in summer research on a topic of their choice at the Boulder campus with a CU-Boulder professor. All expenses are paid, and the SMART internship includes a stipend as well as three hours of independent study credit. The program also includes workshops and seminars. A complete description of the SMART program, eligibility requirements and application information may be found at CU's SMART Program web site. CO-AMP STIPENDS The Colorado Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-AMP) is an innovative consortium of thirteen community colleges and four-year institutions, and four Native American tribes in Colorado and the Four Corners region. The primary goal of CO-AMP is to at least double the number of under-represented minority students successfully completing baccalaureate degrees in Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Technology (SMET) in Colorado and the Four Corners Region. CO-AMP funds student research projects at partner universities, providing student stipends and supplies as well as opportunities to attend conferences and seminars to present one's own research and learn about the research of others. CO-AMP is headed at Colorado State University. For complete program information, please visit their web site. Additionally, MEP has information about CO-AMP research opportunities.
UROP The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is a campus-wide program supporting all students from all disciplines. UROP funds students to do research or creative work in conjunction with faculty members. All full-time (12+ credit hours) students in good academic standing qualify. The amount of funding varies according to the nature of the project. Projects may either be student-initiated or faculty-initiated. Funding is available for spring, summer or fall; it is not necessary to be a full-time student while doing summer UROP work as long as you were a full-time student the previous spring and the following fall. UROP is administered through the CU Division of Student Affairs. Please visit their web site for details on how to apply, deadlines and other procedures for becoming involved in UROP! MS FELLOWSHIPS MEP has received a grant from the Department of Energy/Rocky Flats Field Office to support Master's degree students enrolled in programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science and Applied Mathematics from underrepresented minority groups (African-American, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Hispanic). The grant will provide one year of support to two MS students each year for three years, for a total of six fellowships. Eligible recipients are students who are currently enrolled or have been accepted in MS programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Science or Applied Mathematics and are Colorado residents. Fellowships will provide a stipend equivalent to a Graduate Research Assistant for 12 months including two semesters' resident tuition, fees, and health insurance. For more information, including criteria and how to apply, please download the information sheet in PDF format.
Ph.D. FELLOWSHIPS: AGEP and GEM The Alliance for Graduate Education in the Professoriate (AGEP) is a competitive, grant-funded program for doctoral students in science, mathematics and engineering (SME). The AGEP program seeks to triple the number of underrepresented minorities graduating with Ph.D.s in SME and entering the professoriate. As a member of the AGEP consortium, CU-Boulder ranked 16th in the nation throughout the 1990's for producing minority doctoral students. Eligibility for the program is limited to admitted first-year students in an SME doctoral department that are U.S. citizens, as well as members of the African American, Alaskan Native, Native American or Hispanic ethnic groups. AGEP students are given financial support in numerous areas including full tuition remission and summer research stipends. The CU-Boulder AGEP program is funded by a National Science Foundation grant. For complete AGEP information, visit their web site at the CU Graduate School.
