MEP freshmen enrolled in the "gateway" classes (Calculus I and II, Chemistry, and Physics I and II) are required to participate in Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs). Under the tutelage of graduate student facilitators, students meet an additional 6 to 8 hours a week to work on additional homework problems and practice exams. The purpose of the AEW’s is to help MEP students master their coursework in calculus, physics, and chemistry. The students are challenged to work together in small groups, in order to build their ability to work with others, and develop confidence in their ability to solve problems. The results are impressive. It is our experience that MEP students who regularly participate in the Academic Excellence Workshops consistently achieve significantly higher grades than non-participants.

Thanks to the generous funding provided by the Louis Stokes Colorado Alliance for Minority Participation (CO-AMP) through funds received from the National Science Foundation (NSF), we expanded the AEW’s from their original content to include courses that are common to the various engineering degrees offered by the college. These included Computer Programming (C++ and FORTRAN), Circuits, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, Physics II and Calculus III.
