MEP HISTORY In May of 1973 representatives from corporate America, the federal government, and numerous colleges of engineering participated in an historic meeting in Washington, DC, to address the increasing demand for engineers and the alarming fact that the nation's graduating class of engineers contained less than one percent of Blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans combined.
Dr. Jack Twombly, first MEP director In response to this need, the University of Colorado at Boulder established its Minority Engineering Program (MEP) in the fall of 1973. General Electric's Denver Office, IBM of Boulder, and Public Service Company of Colorado contributed the start-up funding, and the College of Engineering provided a faculty member, Dr. Jack Twombly, on half-time release from professional duties. At the time, only 6 underrepresented minority students were enrolled in the College - a minority enrollment about equal to the national figure of one percent.
Dr. Isidro Rubi, MEP's first full-time director In 1988 the MEP gained its first full-time Director, Dr. Isidro Rubi, who served as an Executive-On-Loan from U S WEST for the previous two years. Dr. Rubi, with the help of Dean Richard Seebass, who fully supported the MEP mission, built the MEP into one of the most successful of its kind. Dr. Rubi worked closely with Ray Landis, Dean of Engineering and Technology, California State University, Los Angeles, to institute the MEP "Building Community" model for the student development of the Boulder campus.
Dr. German Nuņez, Director of MEP 1996-1999 After Dr. Rubi left MEP, Dr. German Nuņez became the Director. Under his directorship, the Minority Engineering Program became Success in Engineering through Excellence and Diversity (SEED). Many changes took place at MEP/SEED as Dr. Nuņez expanded fundraising efforts and tackled in-house improvement projects. Dr. Nuņez left SEED in 1999. After a brief period where the official Director's office was vacant, a new Director, Dave Aragon, ascended to the helm. He remains the director today, and has assembled an outstanding and qualified staff to assist him.
