Construction Multimedia Database
Jim Diekmann and Anthony Songer (Civil Engineering)

ETH students created a web site with video examples of building components filmed during the construction of the ITLL building on campus. This site will help construction-engineering students map what they learn in the classroom to physical artifacts. For example, beginning structural engineering students learn how to calculate the size and characteristics of a structural element such as a concrete beam but may not be able to recognize the real beam in a building or be able to represent that beam in a CAD drawing. The initial version of the web site contains brief descriptions and videos of each artifact. Next semester, ETH students will augment the videos and textual descriptions with CAD drawings and still photographs. Long-term plans include inviting contributions to the web site from faculty at other universities.
