Dr. Roy Henry Garstang Memorial Lecture
The Roy H. Garstang Memorial Lecture was established in 2010 in memory and recognition of the outstanding service of Dr. Roy Henry Garstang (9/18/1925 – 11/1/2009).
Roy was born in Southport, England, and received his BA in 1946, his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1954, and his ScD in Physics and Chemistry in 1983 all from Cambridge University. He served as a Scientific Officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, England, from 1945–46 and as a Scientific Officer at the Ministry of Works from 1946–48. He was also a Lecturer 1952- 60, then a Reader, 1960-64, in Astronomy, at University College, London.
In 1964, he joined the faculty in the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at University of Colorado Boulder, where he remained until his retirement in 1994. During his career he served as; Chairman of JILA (1966–67); Chair of the Faculty Assembly (1988–89); Director, Division of Physics and Astrogeophysics (1979-80); Acting Director of the Fiske Planetarium (1980–81); Secretary of the Senate of the University of Colorado (xx); and for 18 years he served as Secretary for the University of Colorado Chapter of Sigma Xi (1986-2004).
