Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award Recipients
In 1995, seven alumni received the College's most significant recognition,
the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA).
DEAAs can be given in the categories of Education, Research and Invention,
Government Service, Industry and Commerce, Private Practice, and Special.
This last category recognizes those with careers outside of the other categories
or those who are not graduates of the College.

The deadline for 1996 nominations has passed, but nominations for future
consideration are welcome at any time.
Education: During his 33-year career on the CU faculty, Professor
Emeritus Wesley E. Brittin (ChE '42, MS Physics '45) was not only
a successful physicist, educator, and academic administrator, but an exceptional
lobbyist and fund-raiser for the University.
Education: Michael B. Cutlip (PhD ChE '68) was recognized for his
outstanding work as a professor, researcher, and department chair of the
University of Connecticut's Chemical Engineering Department and for his
contributions in computer applications.
Research and Invention: Frederick P. Dolder (EngrPhys '49, MS Physics
'52) was program manager for Ball Brothers' first Orbiting Solar Observatory
and directed several other research laboratories before retiring in 1987.
He passed away in June of this year at the age of 68.
Research and Invention: Dan E. Olson (ME '65, MD '73) is a leading
expert in the field of biological fluid mechanics. He is professor and chief
of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio,
and professor of bioengineering at the University of Toledo.
Government Service: As director of a United Nations project to help
bring modern manufacturing industry to rural areas, Joseph E. Stepanek
(ChE '39) advised the governments of China, Indonesia, Burma, and India
on industrial development strategies.
Industry and Commerce: J. Neil McLagan (ME, BusAdmin '54) rose to
become vice president and member of the board of Denver's Stearns-Roger
Corporation. Today he is part owner, with his son Thomas, and president
of Hyder Construction, Inc.
Industry and Commerce: David E. Weiss (Math '67, MBS '89, MS Telecom
'89) has risen in the computer systems industry to top positions in two
of America's Fortune 500 companies, IBM and Louisville's StorageTek
Corporation. He is currently executive vice president and chief operating
officer of the latter.
