One example of the
program's outreach efforts is its participation in the Engineering
Vanguard Program developed by the National Action Council for Minorities
in Engineering. With the assistance of alumnus Peter Teets, former
president of Lockheed Martin, CU-Boulder is partnering with NACME
to expand the Vanguard Program westward into Colorado, California,
and Texas. Funded by a $450,000 grant from Lucent Technologies,
the program identifies and recruits high school students who are
bypassed by traditional college recruiting methods.
CU has been working
with five Denver Public Schools to identify students interested
in engineering or technology careers, and to conduct an alternative,
performance-based mathematics assessment for admission into the
college. About three-dozen students participated in the assessment,
and 10 finalists were selected. The students will receive full tuition
and housing scholarships to obtain an engineering degree at CU-Boulder
starting in Fall 2000.
In collaboration with
ITLL, SEED is continuing its 2-year-old Success Institute this summer,
targeting Denver middle school students and their parents. SEED
also will continue working with IBM to recruit Native American students
into engineering. www.colorado.edu/engineering/MEP
