Mechanical Engineering

Industry Relations: Good for Students, Good for Industry

Undergraduates (from left to right) Michael Frishman, Heather Duncan, Justin Knappe and Timothy Paymaster work on an assembly molding for a robotic arm for Exabyte Corp.

Engineering, by its very nature, is a discipline focused on industry and commerce. Our students, thus, have two educational tasks. The first is to learn the fundamentals of mathematics and the natural sciences and how to apply this knowledge to analyze and design engineering systems. The second is to understand the nature of the engineering enterprise and act as real engineers operating within the constraints of markets, time limitations, profitability, and so forth.

We have traditionally dealt quite successfully with the first task, but less well with the second. It is for this reason that the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been focusing recently on increased involvement of industry in our educational programs. More
