The earliest settlement in Colorado
can be traced back to 1858 when miners first discovered and extracted precious
minerals from the Rocky Mountains. Once a proud history of hard labor earning
vast rewards, mining has become a costly legacy, especially for the state's
rivers and streams. Under the burden of acid mine drainage resulting from
those earlier days, natural ecosystems have been destroyed.
"Acid mine drainage is one
of the major water quality issues in the Rocky Mountain region," says
Diane McKnight, professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental and
Architectural Engineering and associate director of the Mountain Research
Station of the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research at CU. More
